Note: If you are using a University of Michigan MiWorkspace managed device, VPN software and profiles are configured for you. Please see MiWorkspace Work Remotely for more information. If you need help connecting to VPN on a managed device, please contact the ITS Service Center. These pages provide VPN configurations for unmanaged devices (e.g. research users, BYOD users).

You have two options for manually setting up a VPN connection on a Chromebook: OpenVPN and L2TP/IPSec. These are both VPN protocols, which are different styles of creating a VPN connection. Connect to a VPN. Google’s Chrome OS has integrated support for VPNs. Note that Chrome OS currently only supports L2TP over IPsec with PSK, L2TP over IPsec with certificate-based authentication, and OpenVPN VPNs. Chromebooks can connect to Cisco AnyConnect networks, but the Cisco ASA device must be set up to support L2TP over IPSec. Chromebook might move beyond 1% of the market, particularly in enterprise environments, if people could use it to sign on to the VPN (in more than just a web SSL fashion). 2) When you boil it all down, Chrome O/S is just Linux with some 'Google polish.'

Note: Sponsored affiliates are able to use the VPN if they are issued a University of Michigan ID (UMID) number with their sponsorship credentials.

What is Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client?

The Cisco Systems AnyConnect VPN Client is an application specially designed by Cisco Systems to enable a computer to connect to a virtual private network, or VPN. The way this system works is that with this application you can use the system resources of another network as if you were directly connected via physical hardware to that network itself. The Cisco Systems VPN Client enables such a connection called a VPN tunnel system wherein the connection is unique and exclusive to your computer and the network; the VPN tunnel is encrypted and secure via Cisco’s security algorithms. The Cisco VPN Client is compatible with all Cisco VPN products and services.
The Cisco AnyConnect is normally distributed through the use of an installer and a small profile footprint that enables quick and easy connectivity to a network. This removes the need for manual reconfiguration of the network to connect to a VPN. Additionally, the Cisco VPN Client is not free and is licensed (not purchased) to corporate or university settings, although IT administrators in such environments are allowed to redistribute the licenses and the clients through their network. There are controversies regarding the security of the Cisco VPN Client however, although Cisco has since addressed the issue.
